Driver's license class B – passenger car driver's license

What are you allowed to drive?

  • Motor vehicles (e.g., passenger cars) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 3,500 kg
  • Up to 8 seats (in addition to the driver's seat)
  • Trailers up to 750 kg GVW
  • Larger trailers over 750 kg are also permitted if the total mass of the car + trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg

Minimum age

  • 18 years (standard)
  • 17 years for accompanied driving (BF17)

Training at the driving school

  • Theory lessons:
    • 12 double lessons covering the basics
    • 2 double lessons covering additional material for class B
  •  Practical lessons:
    • Number of driving lessons depending on learning progress
    • Mandatory special trips:
      • 5 cross-country trips
      • 4 highway trips
      • 3 night trips

Exams

  • Theoretical exam:
    • 30 questions
    • Max. 10 penalty points (note: two 5-point questions)
  •  Practical test:
    • Duration: approx. 45 minutes
    • Includes driving techniques, reversing, parking, etc.

Costs

  • In Germany: approx. EUR 1,500–3,000 (depending on region, driving school, and driving experience)

Validity

  • Class B driver's license is valid indefinitely.
  • The document (plastic card) must be renewed every 15 years (photo, no new test).

Driver's license class BF17 – Accompanied driving from age 17

What is BF17?

  • A special model of class B
  • Young people aged 17 and over are allowed to drive a car with a registered accompanying person.
  • Valid only in Germany and Austria

Requirements & Procedure

  • Minimum age: 17 years old
  • Participation in the regular Class B driver's license acquisition process
  • Driver's license exam (theory & practice) before your 18th birthday
  • Issuance of a BF17 test certificate (not a regular driver's license card)

Accompanying person – Requirements

  • At least 30 years old
  • At least 5 years of uninterrupted Class B driver's license
  • Maximum of 1 point in the driver suitability register at the time of registration
  • Name entered in the test certificate

Rules during BF17

  • Driving only when accompanied
  • Accompanying person:
    • Must carry ID card and driver's license
    • Sits in the passenger seat
  • Alcohol limits:
    • Driver: 0.0 per mille
    • Accompanying person: max. 0.5 per mille

What is not permitted?

  • Driving without supervision
  • Driving abroad (exception: Austria)
  • Unregistered accompanying persons

From your 18th birthday

  • BF17 test certificate valid for up to 3 months after your 18th birthday
  • During this period, collect your regular driver's license (plastic card)

Training & Examination

  • Theory: 12× basic material + 2× additional material

Class B197 – Automatic driver's license with manual transmission authorization

What is class B197?

  • Class B driver's license with test on an automatic vehicle
  • Manual transmission vehicles are still permitted (if manual transmission skills are demonstrated at the driving school)
  • Valid since April 1, 2021

Important features

  • Automatic transmission test: Yes
  • Manual transmission vehicles permitted: Yes, with proof of manual transmission competence
  • Key number on driver's license: 197
  • No restriction to automatic transmission

Training procedure

  • Mainly automatic vehicles
  • At least 10 driving lessons of 45 minutes each in a manual vehicle
  • Internal test (60 minutes) in a manual vehicle at the driving school
  • If passed: confirmation of manual transmission skills

Test

  • Theory test: as for B (30 questions, max. 10 penalty points)
  • Practical test: on an automatic vehicle, approx. 45 minutes, TÜV/DEKRA

Advantages

  • Easier learning and testing on automatic vehicles
  • Still allows you to drive manual vehicles later on
  • Valid throughout the EU
  • Ideal for those with test anxiety or motor impairments

Please note: Does not apply to other classes.

  • When upgrading to C1, C, D1, D, no automatic transmission test is required if manual transmission vehicles are to be driven later.
  • Otherwise, the usual automatic transmission restrictions apply (key number 78 without manual transmission competence).

  • Possibly slight additional costs due to extra driving lessons in a manual transmission vehicle

Motorcycle classes A1 / A2 / A / B196

Two-wheeled freedom for every stage of life.
All motorcycle classes, including upgrade options—even without theory. With B196, driver training without an exam is sufficient.

Wird der B196-Führerschein im Ausland anerkannt?

Nein, die 196 stellt eine nationale Schlüsselzahl dar, die nur innerhalb Deutschlands gültig ist. Möchten Sie im Ausland ein entsprechendes Fahrzeug führen, benötigen Sie in der Regel die Führerscheinklasse A1/A2/A.


Muss ich die Motorradbekleidung selber mitbringen ?

Es muss die vollständige Motorradbekleidung zur ersten Fahrstunde mitgebracht werden!

Die Führerscheinklasse A1 berechtigt zum Führen von Leichtkrafträdern.

Mindestalter

16 Jahre 🇩🇪 Gültigkeit Unbefristet, aber der Führerschein selbst muss alle 15 Jahre erneuert werden (nur Dokument, nicht die Fahrberechtigung)


Theorie- und Praxisprüfung

Theorieunterricht: mind. 12 Doppelstunden Grundstoff + 4 Doppelstunden Zusatzstoff

Die Kosten für den Motorradführerschein variieren von Fahrschüler zu Fahrschüler, weil es sich danach richtet wie viele Fahrstunden der Motorrad-Schüler benötigt.

Aufstieg von A1 auf A2 

Der Wechsel vom A1- zum A2-Führerschein ist unkompliziert. Wenn du deinen A1-Führerschein seit mindestens zwei Jahren besitzt, entfällt die Pflicht für zusätzlichen Theorieunterricht, Fahrstunden oder eine theoretische Prüfung. Dennoch ist es empfehlenswert, einige Übungsfahrten zu nehmen, um dich an das leistungsstärkere Motorrad zu gewöhnen. Zudem ermöglicht es deiner Fahrlehrerin oder deinem Fahrlehrer, deine Fahrpraxis zu beurteilen und sicherzustellen, dass du die Anforderungen für die Klasse A2 erfüllst. Erst dann wirst du zur praktischen Prüfung zugelassen.


Voraussetzungen und Ablauf:

  • Kein Theorieunterricht
  • 6 Sonderfahrten (á 45 min) bei weniger als 2 Jahren A1-Besitz; keine Sonderfahrten bei mehr als 2 Jahren A1-Besitz
  • Übungsfahrten bis zur Prüfungsreife
  • Praktische Prüfung erforderlich
  • Mindestalter: 18 Jahre

Aufstieg von A2 auf A

Der Wechsel von der Führerscheinklasse A2 zur unbeschränkten Klasse A ist ebenfalls einfach. Wenn du seit mindestens zwei Jahren im Besitz des A2-Führerscheins bist, sind weder Theorieunterricht noch eine theoretische Prüfung erforderlich.

Trotzdem kann es sinnvoll sein, einige Fahrstunden zu nehmen, um dich mit der höheren Leistung und den Fahreigenschaften der Klasse-A-Motorräder vertraut zu machen. Dein Fahrlehrer oder deine Fahrlehrerin entscheidet, wann du prüfungsreif bist und sicheres Fahrverhalten zeigst, bevor du zur praktischen Prüfung zugelassen wirst.


Voraussetzungen und Ablauf:

  • Kein Theorieunterricht

Advanced seminar (ASF)

Mandatory refresher training for new drivers – structured, understandable, and fair.
The ASF seminar consists of four group sessions of 135 minutes each and a driving test (approx. 30 minutes). Participants must attend all sessions within two to four weeks. The first session usually takes place on Fridays at 6 p.m.

Advanced seminar (ASF)

Structure of the advanced seminar


1. Four group sessions:
Duration: 135 minutes each
Content: Discussion of traffic behavior, identification of hazards, and development of improvement options.

2. A driving test:
Duration: approx. 30 minutes
Objective: Analysis of driving behavior in traffic, followed by a discussion.

What can I expect from the ASF retraining course?
The ASF seminar takes place with 6 to 12 participants. Young traffic offenders must attend 4 sessions of 135 minutes each, which take place over a period of 2 to 4 weeks. However, only one ASF session may be attended per day. Between the first and second ASF sessions, a driving test must be taken in groups of no more than 3 participants. Each participant must drive for 30 minutes in a vehicle of the same class as the one in which they committed the offense that led to the ASF seminar being ordered.

How much does an advanced seminar cost?
 The advanced seminar costs €250 with us.

When do the sessions take place?
The first session usually takes place on Fridays at around 6 p.m. After the first session, all further dates are set jointly.


What happens if I don't attend the advanced seminar?
If you do not attend a refresher course within the specified period and submit the certificate, your driver's license will be revoked.
 The revocation of your driver's license will only be lifted once you have successfully completed the seminar.
If you miss a session or do not attend, the advanced training seminar will be declared invalid. No excuses will be accepted.

Can I complete the advanced training seminar sessions in one day?
No. The sessions must be completed over a period of usually 2-4 weeks.


Points reduction seminar (FES)

1 point reduction – no exam, but with responsibility.
The seminar comprises 2 sessions with us and 2 with a traffic psychologist. It can be used every 5 years to reduce 1 point.

Is it possible to fail a driver aptitude seminar/points reduction seminar?
You cannot fail the seminar as long as you complete all sessions on time.

How often can you attend a driver aptitude seminar?
Every five years, you can attend a driver aptitude seminar, colloquially known as a “points reduction seminar,” and reduce your points balance by one point.

How much does it cost to reduce a point?
The points reduction seminar costs €250 with us.

When do the courses take place?
The dates for the sessions are set when you register.

Do I have to see a traffic psychologist?
Yes, in addition to the two sessions with us, you must also attend two further sessions with a traffic psychologist!
